Summer Reading

Welcome to LMST345, the Literature of Horror, Fantasy and Science Fiction.  This Fall this course will be taught completely online. My goal in this course is to get you to read as much as I can and then, to discuss what you read on your blog or through conversation on our Zoom sessions. The reading we will do in this class falls into (and around) the genres of horror, fantasy and science fiction. Collectively we call these genres--Speculative Literature.

Point System: I have redesigned this course for online delivery and as part of that redesign I have changed to a point system in which you can do the readings and activities of the course, each which is assigned a point value.  Your final grade will be based on the number of points you accumulate before the end of the semester.

Points will be given for various activities such as watching movies, reading short stories, or small projects or written challenges.  These activities will be outlined and presented on activity pages for each week.  These pages will be available just before the semester starts.

Read Now for Points Later: Most points in the course will be earned by reading books. This includes listening to the audiobook version or reading the book in your native language if that is how you would like to read. You are not required to start now, but if you like, you can begin reading books now that you can get credit for once the semester starts.

You will only be given points for activities or books that you write about on your blog for this course. That is also where you will keep track of your points by including in the headline over each post you write, the point value of the activity or book you are writing about.

Reading Program: I have curated a list of books that you can read for course credit and they are listed on a website I have created for this course.  There are FAQs on the website that will further explain how the course works. There is also a page you can read that will explain how to set up your blog on Blogger so you can begin writing about what you read. There are a large number of works from which you can choose to earn points and they have been organized into reading pathways, one which lists featured works that we will be discussing in Zoom sessions, one pathway that focuses on works by women authors, one that focuses on works by LGBTQ+ authors, and one that focuses on works by writers of color.  All the works available for credit are listed on the Course Resource Page. Students are able to create their own reading lists for the course from any of the works listed on the Course Resource Page.

You can use the links in the Links box of this blog or you can go directly to the Start Page of the Reading Program by clicking on this link.  To access the reading list you have to use your regular Ringling username and password.

You can follow the instructions on the Writing Page and create your blog now if you like and then send me the URL of your blog and I will list it with the other student blogs. Please post something on your blog and publish it first so when you copy the URL it is the URL of your blog and not the URL of the blogger dashboard.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me but read the FAQ first to see if your question is answered there.
